Mythbusting Misconceptions: Seating edition

Myths are everywhere. If you see the same idea over and over again when scrolling on social media or searching on Google, you may be more inclined to believe them. However, it is important to use precaution and try to figure out if things are true or not. In this blog, we will debunk some common ergonomic misconceptions regarding seating and office ergonomics.

Myth #1: Ergonomic chairs = Ergonomic workstations

Fact: An ergonomic chair is only the first step to creating an ergonomic workstation. If employees are standing at a standard 29” high desk, a foot rest or an adjustable keyboard tray may be required. Using a footrest will help support your feet, while an adjustable keyboard tray will help lower the keyboard and mouse surface. At Ergo in Motion, we offer ergonomic assessments and make appropriate suggestions based on your current setup. Contact us today to get started and feel better sooner.

Myth #2: Adjusting an office chair is intuitive; employees don’t need training

Fact: Employees typically only know what one or two levers on their chairs do. In order to understand the investment more, employees must know what the adjustment feature does and how to adjust it to best fit them. After an ergonomic assessment through Ergo in Motion, our expert physical therapist and ergonomic specialist can provide you with the knowledge you need to create the right adjustment that is proven to work with you, not against you.

Myth #3: “I’m not experiencing discomfort, I don’t need to make changes to my workstation”

Fact: Glad to hear you are not experiencing discomfort at this moment! However, it is important to know that the types of injuries that occur from poor workstation setup are cumulative in nature, meaning that daily decisions about your workstation setup and working posture affect the wear and tear on the body. Not experiencing pain or discomfort right now doesn’t mean you will not have discomfort 2-3 years in the future.
